Limited Service Opportunities

If you’re limited on time, a legal advice clinic might be the better option. At a legal clinic, pro bono attorneys are asked to provide free information and advice to HVL applicants. We offer both remote and in-person opportunities. Email Brittany.Krohn@hvlp.org if you have a question about volunteering.

Licensed volunteer attorneys needed to assist with providing legal advice and information to HVL applicants over the phone on Wednesday evenings and Friday afternoons.  

Volunteer attorneys will be assigned 4-8 consultations to call. Each volunteer will be  matched with an HVL Staff Attorney for guidance and mentorship, as needed. Volunteer attorneys will have access to online legal resources and telephonic language interpreters, if needed.

Licensed volunteer attorneys needed to provide advice and counsel to veterans in person on Friday afternoons from 1 pm – 4 pm. The clinic takes place at the Michael E. DeBakey VA Hospital located at 2002 Holcombe Blvd 77030, VA Hospital BLDG 108A.

An HVL Staff Attorney Mentor will be on-site to help with the legal advice sessions and provide access to necessary resources.

Licensed volunteer attorneys who speak Spanish are needed to assist with providing legal advice and information to Spanish speaking HVL applicants over the phone on the first Thursday of each month from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Volunteer attorneys will be assigned 6-8 clients to call and paired with an HVL Staff Attorney for mentorship. Volunteers will be able to discuss the cases with their HVL mentor attorney prior to and/or during their calls and will have access to relevant online legal resources.

Purpose: Bring legal immigration services to low-income Legal Permanent Residents by assisting them with their naturalization process and helping them to remove other barriers to naturalization and disaster resiliency.

Attorney Role

  • Conduct legal review of Citizenship Application
  • Complete Notice of Entry of Appearance as Attorney (limited representation)
  • Complete Naturalization Application (N-400)
  • Complete Fee Waiver Application (-1912) or Reduce Fee Request

Non-Attorneys & Paraprofessionals Role

  • Assist attorney with interpretation
  • Assist attorney with document translation (if needed)
  • Assist attorneys and applicants with completing the application
