In Memoriam - Jerry C. Larson, Jr.
Jerry C. Larson, Jr.
May 8, 1973 – August 27, 2019
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Houston Volunteer Lawyers (HVL) Supervising Staff Attorney, Jerry C. Larson Jr.
Jerry joined HVL in 2007 as a Staff Attorney with HVL’s HIV/AIDS unit. Prior to working with HVL, Jerry was the Executive Director of Southeast Texas Legal Clinic in Montrose, whose sole focus was representation of people living with HIV/AIDS. Jerry was a graduate of Creighton University School of Law. He received a B.A. in History from Sam Houston State University and an M.A. in Theological Studies from the University of St. Thomas. Jerry had lived in the Montrose area since 1999.
Jerry was well known by clients and agencies within the HIV/AIDS community and had a reputation as an attorney who always went above and beyond for his clients. His dedication was not only professional but deeply personal as well. As an example, he once personally assisted a client move into a different apartment, even volunteering his brother Jeff’s help – and truck – as well. He often volunteered his parents and grandmother to be witnesses at HVL Will clinics. This personal affection and dedication were reciprocated by his clients. Jerry’s clients spoke of the kindness and empathy he would provide during his representation.
During his tenure at HVL, Jerry played an active role in the creation of our Harris County Law Library Pro Se Assistance project. He was also a leader in Consumer Law issues. Jerry was a favorite among our volunteer attorneys and was often specifically requested by law firms to be included as a participant in pro bono projects.
Jerry is survived by his parents, Jerry C. Larson Sr. and Penny Larson; his grandmother, Lois Hassett, his brother, Jeff Larson; his sister-in-law, Sharon Larson; and his nephew, Cory Larson. He also leaves behind his cat, Astro, whom he rescued.
Jerry was beloved by the HVL staff and will be missed for his dedication and willingness to help others, his practical jokes, and his exuberant spirit. We have lost not only an exceptional attorney and colleague but also a trusted friend and mentor.
