Bebe Thomas has been making a difference in the lives of low-income Texans by volunteering with HVL for over 5 years, first during law school and then as a new associate. Recently, she began volunteering with our new Alternative Dispute Resolution clinic, where attorneys attend JP court to offer mediation between landlords and tenants who cannot afford legal representation.

- What has your experience been like with the HVL ADR clinics?
My experience with the HVL Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) clinics has been profoundly enriching. As a lawyer, I have gained invaluable insights and honed my skills significantly through hands-on practice. The clinics have provided a unique platform to apply theoretical knowledge in real-world scenarios, enhancing my legal acumen and problem-solving abilities. While I appreciate the convenience of online sessions, I have found that attending court in person offers a more dynamic and engaging environment, allowing for richer interactions and a deeper understanding of the nuances involved in dispute resolution. Attending in-person also allows me to build relationships with the other volunteers and HVL attorneys.
- How does volunteering with the ADR clinic fit into your schedule?
Volunteering with the ADR clinic is a priority that I have worked to seamlessly integrate into my schedule. I allocate specific time slots monthly for this pro bono work, ensuring that it does not conflict with my other professional commitments. Although it isn’t a perfect system and I sometimes need to reschedule, the flexibility offered by the clinic allows me to balance my responsibilities effectively, making it a sustainable and rewarding part of my routine.
- Why should your attorney peers volunteer for the ADR clinic? If they are on the fence, what would you say to sway them?
I would strongly encourage my attorney peers to volunteer for the ADR clinic. The experience is not only professionally rewarding but also personally fulfilling. It offers a unique opportunity to develop critical skills in negotiation and mediation, which are essential in today’s legal landscape. For those on the fence, I would emphasize the profound impact this work has on the community. By volunteering, attorneys can make a tangible difference in the lives of individuals who lack access to legal representation, while simultaneously enhancing their own professional growth.
- What made this ADR volunteer opportunity stand out from other pro bono work you’ve done?
This ADR volunteer opportunity stands out due to its focus on alternative dispute resolution. Unlike other pro bono work that may involve more traditional legal representation, the ADR clinic emphasizes collaborative problem-solving and negotiation. This approach not only broadens my legal expertise but also allows me to contribute to more amicable and efficient resolutions for clients, which is both challenging and rewarding.
- Why is this kind of dispute resolution important for clients who can’t afford legal representation?
Alternative dispute resolution is vital for clients who cannot afford legal representation because it provides an accessible and cost-effective means of resolving disputes. ADR processes, such as mediation and arbitration, often result in quicker resolutions compared to traditional litigation, reducing the financial and emotional burden on clients. Moreover, ADR empowers clients by involving them directly in the resolution process, fostering a sense of ownership and satisfaction with the outcomes.
- What kind of support do you receive from HVL as a volunteer?
As a volunteer with HVL, I receive comprehensive support that enhances my ability to serve clients effectively. HVL provides access to a wealth of resources, including training sessions, legal materials, and expert guidance from experienced practitioners. Also, Elliott is available in-person or online during the negotiations. This support ensures that I am well-equipped to handle the complexities of each case and deliver high-quality legal assistance to those in need. Additionally, the collaborative environment at HVL fosters a sense of community and shared purpose among volunteers, further enriching the volunteer experience.
