Help with the Effects of Hurricane Harvey

If you have been affected by recent flooding in our area and need legal help, we are here for you.

  • Representatives from both Lone Star Legal Aid and Houston Volunteer Lawyers will be at Houston-area shelters beginning on August 31, to provide information about how to access legal aid resources and to answer basic questions.
  • The Houston Bar Association will host Legal Line - a live phone bank manned by licensed Texas lawyers - Monday through Friday, September 5 to 29, from 3 pm to 5 pm. Extended hours (5 pm to 9 pm) will be offered on Wednesday, September 6, and Wednesday, September 20.  Simply call (713) 759-1133 during the hours of operation.  The same service will be provided for Spanish-Speakers on Thursday, September 7, between the hours of 6 pm and 8 pm.
  • The State Bar of Texas Diaster Hotline has been activated: (800) 504-7030. The hotline — answered in English, Spanish, and Vietnamese — connects low-income people affected by a disaster with legal aid providers in their area who can help with such issues as replacing lost documents, answering insurance questions, helping with landlord-tenant problems, and handling consumer protection concerns such as price-gouging and contractor scams during the rebuilding process.  Callers can leave a message at any time.
  • If you wish to speak with a lawyer in person and apply for free, long-term legal representation through the Houston Volunteer Lawyers pro bono program, please call our Intake Line at (713) 228-0732 to find out about our next free legal advice clinic, where you can sit down face-to-face with an attorney to discuss your concerns and options.

Attorneys interested in volunteering to help victims of the storm with legal needs should register on our Portal.  As volunteer opportunities become available, we will be in contact.

Houston Volunteer Lawyers and the State Bar of Texas reminds the public that solicitation of a potential legal case is a crime unless the lawyer has a family relationship with you or you have been a client of the lawyer in the past or are currently a client. Solicitation of you is also a crime if perpetrated by a non-lawyer employee or representative of the lawyer, unless the previous conditions exist. Please report any prohibited contacts by lawyers or their representatives, whether in person, telephone, or otherwise, to your local law enforcement authority or the State Bar of Texas at (877) 953-5535.
